Question:

Is parent provided health insurance for the child considered part of child support? I am living in California, but have not been here long enough (only 3 1/2 months) to have established residency. I came from Oregon and don't know if it is part of child support there, either. If both states could be answered, I would appreciate it.

Selected Answer:

In California, a child

In California, a child support order usually requires the parents to share the costs of reasonable health-care expenses. If a parent has health insurance through work, that is usually the health insurance the court prefers be provided for the child. Therefore, if one parent is paying for the child’s health insurance through their paycheck, the court will likely consider this when determining the amount of child support to award. Similar to California, in Oregon child support includes providing health insurance coverage.
